Cold & Flu What Can I Do?

2010 COLD and FLU SEASON HELP

What can you do?

As you know, there is no “cure” for any virus but there are ways you can defend your body against infections and strengthen your immune system.

The #1 way to prevent the flu is Good Hygiene. Washing your hands with plain soap and warm water for a full 30 seconds before rinsing hands, and avoiding touching your face are the simplest, most effective things you can do. Not enough sleep puts stress on your body making you more susceptible to illness so be sure to get enough zzzz’s. Avoid or at least reduce sugar and caffeine which can suppress your immune system. As important as washing your hands is, don’t over-bathe, as many Americans do. A layer of dead skin helps prevent infections by acting as a barrier.

Prevent: There are many supplements you can have on hand and take preventively. We take the following year round: Vitamin C (1-2 grams daily); vitamin D3 (5000 iu daily, 10,000+ iu with a cold) and a probiotic. We take the following during flu season (October – April): Garlic, a Mushroom formula, Zinc, plus a Homeopathic remedy created each fall specifically for that season’s flu. We also use a Neti Pot to keep our nasal and sinus passages clear.

Combat: If you are just getting sick or are already sick here are some supplements we purchase to support your immune system while it combats the infection. There are many but some of the ones we take are Black Elderberry Extract, Zinc Lozenges, Oscillococcinum (the #1 flu remedy in France) and Colloidal Silver, We also increase our Vitamin D3 to 50,000 iu per day for 3 days.

Herbal Teas we use when under the weather:

Sore throats: marshmallow root, slippery elm, licorice (antibacterial, anti viral and anti inflammatory)

Congestion: oolong black tea (expectorant, the caffeine is a bronchodilator), rosehips (vit c), chamomile (takes edge off caffeine and is anti bacterial, antiseptic and antispasmodic)

Nausea, chills, aching muscles: ginger

Flu Fighter: Elderberry, peppermint

Email me with questions or the names of the specific brands we take. We purchase our supplements from www.iherb.com for the best prices. Use coupon code BOT164 on first order for a discount.
